Jade grew up in the snowy resort town of Ketterburg, on the far reaches of the Malkuth Empire. In those days, however, Ketterberg was slow, sleepy, and remote. The perfect place to shelter and hide the young heir to the Malkuthian throne, Emperor Peony IX. Peony would be one of few friends that Jade Balfour acquired as a child; being somewhat quiet, morose, and “demonic”, it was power that fascinated Jade, rather than companionship. Nonetheless, during his years in his hometown, he would be induced into a small group of playmates that consisted of Saphir (a younger boy who was somewhat like Jade’s unwanted pet), Peony, and his own elder sister, Nephry. It would be Nephry who raised Jade mostly, and though her charge had an unspoken soft spot for the girl-- a protective streak and a brotherly love-- Nephry found her sibling somewhat disturbing. Though this was likely due to the way Jade spent his time as a child. The boy’s unique and malicious tastes created a distance between them, a fear and a sympathy on her end, and a feeling of rejection and oddity on his.

Jade discovered his attraction lay in two aspects of discovery rather early on in his timeline. The boy enjoyed Artes—powerful spells that call upon the energy of fonons that all living beings contain. He reveled in mastering particularly difficult ones, surpassing adult fonists with ease, casting devastating elemental charms for his own amusement. Fonic Artes, however, were his secondary obsession. A slight hint of sadism blended with an expert curiosity gave way to his obsession with anatomy. A scientist at heart, the child often murdered even harmless monsters, either to see what lay inside, or else for his own entertainment. Jade did not understand what it meant to die, but he was preoccupied with what it meant to be alive. This is why it became his ultimate goal to become a doctor of the dead; someone who could explore human bodies after they’d been killed, or otherwise disposed, to locate cause of death, to perform organ transplant, or genuinely—just to investigate the inner human body with which he had such a vested interest.

Unfortunately, a blend of two features would soon bring the child tragedy. The first was that, despite Jade’s impressive talent in the area of fonic Artes, he was only able to use the first through sixth fonons; his body type was indisposed to the seventh fonon, or rather, the healing fonon. Slightly precocious, unable to quite accept failure on his own part, while Jade respected those who could use the seventh fonon, he also envied them terribly—and refused to give in to the idea that it was ‘impossible’ for him to use the last fonon. The second element was that same lack of understanding about ‘death’.

Just as he believed the seventh fonon could be overcome, so to Jade believed that death itself could be surpassed, if only one was intelligent enough to know how…

Professor Nebilim would enter Ketterberg, and the lives of that small group of friends, around the time Jade was eight or so years of age. A former Locrian general of Yulia City and the Order of Lorelei, Nebilim was a prestigious seventh fonist who gave up her Military lifestyle due to moral objection. Instead, she became the teacher of Jade, Nephry, and Saphir (Peony also snuck out of his manor prisons for her lessons). Jade developed an instant liking and respect for her, a woman who was both powerful and kind, and strove to be her favoured pupil. His fondness for Nebilim went deeper than it ever had with any other person, and is generally believed to have even developed into his first ‘puppy crush’.

In other lessons, however, more private lessons, the former Militia woman taught Jade how to use and control his Artes. Jade was in Nebilim’s home the night he got the harrowing idea to try to use the seventh fonon, despite his inability with it. Predictably, it lost control, setting Nebilim’s house aflame. In the woman’s rush to stop and protect him, she ended up giving her own life.

When Saphir and Jade pulled her from the smoking wreckage, she was still just barely alive. They laid her on the snowy ground, and Jade had and proposal for saving her; Fomicry. Fomicry was the scientific process developed by Jade at nine years of age whereby which he’d taken his sister’s broken doll and replicated a new one. There was a flaw in the reason of Fomicry, however, that Jade was blind to; the doll he’d created for Nephry was a new doll. Though it was physically the same, a perfect copy, it was not the same doll she had played with all those years. So, in his first bout of Human Fomicry to ‘save’ Professor Nebilim, the boy who did not think much of death did not realize that he wouldn’t be ‘fixing’ his beloved Professor—he’d be creating a new being, with her visage.

The new being that Jade create was a monster. She loathed Jade for her invention, and moreover, having been created from the dying Nebilim, her mind was deformed and rotted; she was insane, and murderous. All because someone was too proud to know their limitations.
